THE BUSINESS LEAD
From our Managing Director Andrew Fenwick
Welcome to the first edition of Galley Gossip for 2026. Although the weather was a bit mixed during the Christmas and New Year period, I hope you all spent some relaxing time out on the water with family and friends. It is hard to believe that we are now heading into Autumn and have seen two months come and go already this year.
If you are unaware, the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Broken Bay have a great event planned for March, to be held in Refuge Bay in support of Gotcha4Life. They are excited to bring you the iconic RMYC Raft Up 4 Life — a one-of-a-kind event on Saturday, March 7, 2026 raising vital funds for mental fitness programs. Set against the stunning backdrop of Refuge Bay, this festival promises an unforgettable day on the water with incredible live music, a vibrant community atmosphere, and a floating prawn and oyster bar serving fresh seafood straight to your boat. Further details are available on the club's website

We have also welcomed Alex Gillespie of Oceantec Marine and his team. Oceantec has been providing engineering services to the boating community for more than 10 years, initially out of the Northern Beaches area, and has expanded to cover Sydney and north through to Newcastle. Alex and the team commenced set up of their new workshop here in January.
Joining Oceantec is an old friend, Andy Williams, who a lot of you will remember worked for Steve Callaghan for many years as a head technician. Andy and his teammates can provide service to Volvo, Cat, Yanmar and Mercury equipment, just to name a few. Drop in or phone Alex (02 9939 4698) to see how his team can assist to enhance your boating experience.
We continue to be very busy on the hardstand, and I again take this opportunity to remind all our clients that it is important to plan your out-of-water maintenance. Work out what will suit your schedule during the year and lock in dates as soon as possible. This not only helps us to plan our forward works, but will save you frustration and potential disappointment when booking times go out to three and four months' notice, as will happen as the year goes on.
I will be taking some time off work, as of March, to have surgery on my shoulder. During this period our team will be covering for me, and I am sure this will make my absence feel seamless as they steer our operation forward into 2026. I hope you enjoy this edition of GG and I look forward to writing our next update in or around June.
Cheers, Andrew Fenwick

SERVICES ONSITE

Bird Electrical specialises in Lithium battery installations.
Lithium batteries can change your boating fun. They weigh much less, have nearly twice the equivalent capacity, have a 10 year warranty and charge much faster than previous chemistries.
Bird Electrical is committed to providing Lithium battery upgrades to vessels in accordance with the Australian and New Zealand standard, AS/NZS3004. The standard requires a visual and audio alarm at the helm if the batteries are about to switch off. We have been using Voltgo Lithium batteries which provide a cost effective replacement for old fashioned lead based batteries at a very similar price. Voltgo batteries have communications ports to communicate with Sieltec battery Monitoring systems providing the alarm facilities required for compliance with the Australian standard. As well as the helm alarm facility the battery monitoring system can provide relevant data on each battery in the battery bank, immediately identifying if one battery in the bank is underperforming.
Please speak to us about all of your battery needs including solar charging, the sensible capacity for your boat, insurance implications, remote monitoring and how to get the most out of your battery installation.
We can also provide generator autostart facilities so if the batteries do go flat for any reason you generator can automatically start and recharge them, switching off the generator when they are full. It basically means the battery system takes care of itself.
Our modern Lithium battery solutions now can be designed to accommodate the entire vessel load including air conditioning. Please let us design your system for maximum flexibility and a minimum of boating energy stress.
Please contact us about Voltgo Lithium Batteries to find out how they can satisfy your boating needs. Check out the Sieltec Battery Monitor here. https://sieltec.com.au/lithium-battery-monitor

UPDATES IN OUR BUILDING

Late last year, as part of our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, we refreshed our front office to provide our team with updated, functional workspaces and to create a fresh, welcoming environment for our clients. After 40 years of operating as a family business, we believe it’s important to keep investing in both our people and the spaces we share with you.

Starting next week the 9th of March, our team will be utilising the Captains Lounge during their break times while we update their lunchroom. This space hasnt been updated since it was built in the 80's so it’s overdue for our hardworking staff enjoy a refreshed and updated lunchroom. We appreciate your understanding while we make these improvements to have a shared space. Updates should be completed in about 1 months time.

We’re also excited to share that our new onsite tenants, Oceantec, have taken on updating the downstairs workshop and are transforming it into a clean, showroom-ready service area and we’re absolutely loving the way their space is coming together.
